Adobe Acquires Business Catalyst - Just Our Perspective

Ever since late last night, almost every communication channel we have here at SimpleFlame has been buzzing about the news of Adobe's buyout of Business Catalyst / GoodBarry. It seems as if there are mixed emotions about how the buy-out affects everyone involved, especially existing partners. The biggest question of the day is "So Jason… what do you think about the news?" Although I've had the opportunity to speak to some of you, I figured it would be best to dust off the old blog and communicate my thoughts.

First off, I'm really proud of the team at Business Catalyst. These guys (and gals) have been working their tails off on a system that has caught the attention of the most influential player in the web design space. After meeting the Business Catalyst team in San Francisco back in May, I have never felt more confident that these guys are fully committed to delivering the best possible platform to their partners. Now, with Adobe's backing, I am excited to see how the platform might evolve.

Business Catalyst Partners

What an incredible opportunity it is to be a Business Catalyst Partner. Basically, here is what happened overnight:

  • The solution you sell to your clients is now backed by Adobe, which everyone knows. If they don't know the name, just tell people it’s the company that invented PDF files. You just gained an enormous amount of credibility and it didn't cost you a dime. You can now say to your clients/prospects "We are a Certified Adobe Business Catalyst Partner". Of course, you can only use the word "Certified" if you have completed the Designer Success Program. If you've been putting that off, now is the perfect time to sign up.
  • For some of you, your biggest competitor is going away. The GoodBarry brand will expire on October 1, 2009 and so will the comments from your tech savvy prospects that recognize you as a GoodBarry look-a-like. Now they can only get the system from you. That's good stuff!
  • All of the Adobe tools we already use to build websites will most likely have direct integration into Business Catalyst. Yeah, there’s Triangle integration already, but what about all of Adobe's products? I can imagine there will be a direct publish utility and CMS integration with Flash, advanced Flex integration, etc. The opportunities are quite limitless. Now, this is only a prediction on my part (which is pretty easy to make) but think about how this might change your productivity? Personally, I am curious how it will play out.

Most partners that I have spoken to in the last 24 hours are just trying to process the news. How does this affect my business? Will the commission structure change? Is Adobe going to dump all of us and pull off a GoodBarry on steroids? Will Adobe give all of the existing partners a full copy of CS5 (is that even out yet?) just for the fun of it? OK, nobody asked that last question but you have to admit that would be pretty cool, right?

If anyone was affected by the news it was us. How do you go from "GoodBarry Experts" to "Business Catalyst Experts" overnight? It's called a lot of coffee, a lot of jokes and an incredible team of people getting it done. Trying to squeeze "Business Catalyst Experts" in our logo without the need for a magnifying glass was the biggest challenge of all (right Cesar?). We're still not finished, but we are well on our way.

Here is my advice... take a deep breath. Adobe develops software that EMPOWERS web professionals, and that’s a great thing. I mean, if they want to hire an army of web designers and build every site on the planet, I guess they could try... but something tells me that their intention is not to take business from their core audience, but to empower it. I suppose anything could happen, but when Adobe purchased Business Catalyst, they also purchased the partner network... which is the bread and butter of their revenue model.

GoodBarry Website Owners

For those GoodBarry website owners that have an upgraded website (meaning you are currently paying for it) please visit the FAQ's on GoodBarry.com to see how this will affect you immediately. However, to sum it up, here is what you will experience as of October 1.

  • Instead of seeing the GoodBarry logo in the upper left hand corner of your admin panel, it will be Business Catalyst
  • Instead of your billing statement saying GoodBarry it will say Business Catalyst

For those of you who have not upgraded your GoodBarry website and plan to after November 1, you must have a Certified Business Catalyst Partner/Reseller handle the upgrade. Just in case you were wondering, SimpleFlame is a Certified Partner and can help you with your site upgrade (and support you too).

The best piece of advice I can offer up to a GoodBarry website owner is to align yourself with a Certified Business Catalyst Partner. Since GoodBarry is going away and Business Catalyst will be targeting web professionals only, I suspect that over time direct support will be pushed off to the Business Catalyst partner network. Aligning yourself now with an active partner will be critical so you can focus on your business and not on technology. Final Thoughts

If you're a Business Catalyst Partner, feel empowered to use Adobe's credibility in your sales pitch. Go get after it and use the news to your advantage. Stop reading the news on TechCrunch.com and start making calls.

If you're a GoodBarry website owner, start interviewing Certified Business Catalyst Partners and align yourself with a partner that has a proven track record in the system and can adequately handle your support needs. If you want to interview us, just let us know.

Couldn't agree with you more Jason. At first glance...I said, "What?". Then I processed it and it makes perfect sense. Overnight brand recognition (for now) is the number one partner benefit. There is, however a lot to process and I get a headache when I think of the integration possibilities :-)

Yeah, actually a request we've been getting as of late is Scene 7 Integration. Now I'm glad I haven't spent a ton of time investigating how to do it. Thanks much for your comments Dave!!

I am also in total agreement and am particularly pleased about the whole issue of transparency. Having gone through my training when it was still on "Aussie Time" and it was 6-am and freezing cold in the UK, I must say the "Certified Adobe Partner" title does sound sweet. All the best Felix

Good insights Jason, especially on the importance of the certification process. I've never seen the importance of the certification process up until now (I just hit the ground and ran as a partner). Now I just booked my first Core session (although I already really know how to do it). Anyway, I also read your Scene7 comment, which coincidentally I started reading on when I heard the news (I was trying to look at potential synergies for Adobe products and Scene 7 kinda makes sense.). Good luck on all of us partners. It's definitely great to not have to worry about GoodBarry at this point (like some partners, I did encounter the "GoodBarry question"), and my answer to that was "try to figure it out"... We have to be honest, there is an initial steep learning curve for BC; but once you are over it, wheels start turning on possibilities... Hopefully, Adobe just didn't but BC because of potential MS play --- after all BC pushed the boundaries of .net CMS implementation and an MS acquisition would have been very good for MS Web Expression platform... That's just me talking.... Have a great weekend and I hope to work with you guys in the future.. Victor

Felix and Victor, thank you both for your comments! We have already started to use the "Adobe Business Catalyst..." label. Every partner that I have spoken to (which has been an extraordinary amount this week) agrees that credibility was something that plagued them in the past. Not any longer! As for Scene 7, I know a number of partners and current GoodBarry users that would love this for sure. Thanks again to both of you for your comments.

I got an email from businesscatalyst advertising their acquisition mentioning a discount. That got me into thinking about joining as a reseller / rebrander, but I wonder... if the news is so good, why slash off prices now? It does seem a bit like they are trying to squeeze every penny out of the whole thing before it goes bust. Or is it just my paranoia talking? :)

Hey Mike, I'm not aware of the reseller discount however, I can tell you for sure that they are not going bust. They are investing heavily in the software and the infrastructure. Yep, it's probably your paranoia :)

As a brand-new evaluator of BC, I am considering taking the time to have some of my team work with it on the 30-day free eval to see if it is as good, as powerful, as rich as it appears to be from the excellent videos posted at the BC site. We are a high-end Web team with a lot of tech savvy and design experience and I've avoided "cookie cutter" tools until lately. We recently had a client who insisted we use WordPress and I was stunned at how great a site two guys on my team were able to assemble in a couple of months. That opened my eyes and mind to looking at more such tools, perhaps with more robustness. BC looks like it might fit that bill. Questions: 1. How steep is the learning curve Victor Ramayrat mentioned above? Would you expect it to take days, weeks or months for a team of experienced pro developers to get comfortable with the tool? Can we expect to get a clear enough appreciation for it in a 30-day trial? 2. How big is the BC community and where in the world do they hang out? None of my searches revealed any discussion boards, newsletters, or even online review mentions of BC and that, frankly, concerns me a lot. Thanks for any insights.

Dan, thanks for your comment. First, I'm glad your looking into Business Catalyst and asking all of the appropriate questions up front. We were in the same boat over 2 years ago when we were discovering Business Catalyst. To keep things simple, I'll merely respond to your points in bullet point fashion.

When you say "cookie-cutter" do you mean the design capabilities or do you mean the functional capabilities? Not knowing which one you meant, I'll address both. Design capabilities are not limited at all. Take a look at our own portfolio. If we avoided our public affiliation with BC, you really wouldn't know these were sites developed in a tool such as BC. As for "cookie-cutter" functionality, yes it is a hosted solution, yet offers a wide array of functionality that no other system (that I know of) provides. However, you can do quite a bit with the API (which being a tech-savvy company should appreciate). In 2 years, I have only had to turn 3 people away from BC due to their requirements going outside the core scope of what BC has to offer and would end up being a bad scalability choice for their businesses.

The learning curve is dependent upon the capabilities of the person learning. If your team is rather tech-savvy, they should have no problem at all.

Time to learning for an experienced development team, I would say weeks. However, we've been actively using it for over 2 years and still find things every day.

Can you get a clear picture in 30 days? It depends on if you are just in tinkering around with it or really taking it for a full test drive. I believe you have to go through a project or two before you can really gain an appreciation for the system. This applies to any other tool as well, such as Wordpress. Again, this is a relative question that is dependent on the person/team learning.

As for online reviews, most of those were originally conducted under the former retail name, GoodBarry. Do some searching around on GoodBarry like terms and you'll find more of what you are looking for.

Thanks, Jason. I joined the LinkedIn group and bookmarked the other ones. I'll do some searching for GoodBarry reviews this weekend as well. I'm pretty happy with our present toolset but some of my teammates have been pushing hard to do more "recipe-driven" (maybe better than "cookie cutter") tools, especially WordPress, to provide high-quality sites to our clients at lower rates and with faster turnaround. While I maintain a healthy skepticism, I'm intrigued by what I've seen so far of BC and it does seem to me to offer a far more seamless way of doing web design and development than WordPress and its tens of thousands of plugins.

To be honest, I think the acquisition could have gone much smoother than it has. BC seems to be falling apart in many areas where most other system are perfectly stable.
